FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about selecting, planting, and caring for food plot seeds. Learn best practices for soil preparation, timing, spacing, watering, and harvesting to maximize your plot's success.

When is the best time to plant a food plot?

Timing depends on your region and the seed blend you're planting. As a general guide:

  • Annual fall blends (like Buck Max Fall Blend & All Season Buck Blend): Northern regions July 15–Aug 15, Central July 25–Sept 1, Southern Sept 15–Nov 15
  • Perennial clover blends (like Lucky Chic & Multi-Season Clover): Spring planting Feb–June depending on region, or fall planting Aug–Oct

Always check the planting guide on your specific product for the most accurate timing.

Do I need to do a soil test before planting?

A soil test is highly recommended. It tells you the pH and nutrient levels of your soil so you can apply the right fertilizer and lime. Most food plot seeds thrive at a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0. If you skip the soil test, apply 13-13-13 fertilizer at approximately 200 lbs per acre as a general starting point.

How deep should I plant my seeds?

Most food plot seeds should be planted at 1/4 inch depth or less. Small seeds like clover and chicory need light to germinate and should barely be covered. Larger seeds like oats or beans can go slightly deeper. Always ensure good seed-to-soil contact for best germination rates.

How much seed do I need per acre?

  • Buck Max Fall Blend: 8 lb bag plants up to 1/4 acre
  • Lucky Chic Clover & Chicory Blend: 3.5 lb bag plants up to 1/2 acre
  • All Season Buck Blend: 8 lb bag plants up to 1/4 acre
  • Multi-Season Clover Blend: 3.5 lb bag plants up to 1/2 acre

Do I need to till the ground before planting?

Tilling is ideal for new plots as it loosens the soil and improves seed-to-soil contact. However, no-till planting is possible with a quality no-till drill or by broadcasting seed after mowing existing vegetation short. The key is ensuring seeds make contact with bare soil rather than sitting on top of thick grass or debris.

What fertilizer should I use?

If you have a soil test, follow its recommendations. Without a soil test, a balanced fertilizer like 13-13-13 at 200 lbs per acre is a solid starting point for most food plot blends. For clover plots, adding lime to raise soil pH is often just as important as fertilizer.

How long do perennial blends last?

Perennial blends like our Lucky Chic Clover & Chicory Blend and Multi-Season Clover Blend can last up to 5 years with proper maintenance — including mowing to prevent weeds, fertilizing annually, and overseeding thin areas as needed.

What wildlife will be attracted to my food plot?

Our blends are designed primarily for whitetail deer, but many also attract turkey, rabbits, and other wildlife. Clover and chicory blends are especially popular with deer and turkey. Grain-based blends with oats, buckwheat, and brassicas draw deer heavily during fall and early winter.

Can I plant food plots in shaded areas?

Most food plot seeds prefer full sun to partial shade. Clover is the most shade-tolerant option in our lineup. Heavily shaded areas (less than 4 hours of direct sunlight) will significantly reduce germination and growth for most blends.

How do I know which blend is right for my property?

  • Season: Do you want year-round attraction or a fall hunting plot?
  • Maintenance: Perennial blends require less replanting; annuals need to be replanted each season.
  • Plot size: Match the bag coverage to your acreage.
  • Region: Check planting dates for your area.
