Annual or perennial?

Annual blends are planted fresh each season. Our annuals are fall and late-season blends built on brassicas, grains and legumes, plus a warm-season milo. Choose an annual when you want a hunting plot this year.

Perennial blends (clover and chicory) can last up to 5 years with proper maintenance: mowing to keep weeds down, fertilizing annually and overseeding thin areas. Choose a perennial when you want a plot that comes back season after season with less replanting.

Four questions to ask

  • Season: do you want forage from spring through fall, or a fall hunting plot?
  • Maintenance: perennials need less replanting; annuals are replanted each season.
  • Plot size: match the bag coverage to your acreage.
  • Region: check the planting window for your area on each product page.

Start with the soil

A soil test tells you the pH and nutrient levels of your ground so you can apply the right fertilizer and lime. Most food plot seeds do best at a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0. If you skip the soil test, 13-13-13 fertilizer at about 200 lbs per acre is a general starting point.

Sun and shade

Most food plot seeds prefer full sun to partial shade. Clover is the most shade-tolerant option in our lineup. Areas with less than 4 hours of direct sunlight will see much weaker germination and growth for most blends.

Warm-season annuals go in after the last frost, once soil reaches 60°F: summer forage, soil building, and milo for late-season food and cover.
